Serena Zhang's profile

East & West calendar

The goal of this project is to experiment with different cultural elements to tell a story by creating a new style of calendar. Also, my incentive is to introduce the traditional Chinese painting to the western world by combining Chinese techniques with English letterforms to characterize the four seasons. Each season is characterized by a subject from Chinese painting.

Winter (December – February) is symbolized by bamboo, because bamboo represents strength and vitality. Spring (March – May) is pictured as a mountain and river, because this period is the best time to go see scenery. Summer (June – August) is shown through flowers, because they bloom everywhere during this time. Autumn (September – November) is portrayed by fish, because fall is harvest time, and fish is a sign of abundance.
